Most CFLs are not designed to work with dimmers. Dimming a CFL that is not designed to work with a dimmer switch will likely shorten its life significantly. However, there are CFLs that will work with dimmers, just check the label. I've seen dimmable CFLs at Lowes and Ace Hardware.
